My go-to Clean Summertime Makeup Routine

If your motto this summer is to "keep it simple", I have the perfect skincare routine that will keep your skin glowing, protected, and only good for your ingredients. About 5 years ago, I began looking deeper into the ingredients that not only went on my plate but our largest organ, our skin. And what I found shocked me!

Clean skincare and makeup are all the rage right now. Every company is telling you how they are "vegan", "clean", and even changing packaging to invoke that simple and clean vibe. But to be honest, it's what inside that counts most. Making sure to use websites like can prevent you from purchasing a product you trust as clean, solely based on the way the package looks.

You can head to to check out your own products to begin cleaning up your routine, or you can check out my suggestions below on some of my favorite and most trusted brands that I have used for years. These simple steps are what I put on my face every day to protect it and nourish it as I age gracefully. The most important thing for your skin is a good diet, full of plants, healthy fats, and water. But these items below can be a great support addition to your natural skincare game.

  1. Sunscreens: My mother taught me from a young age that sunscreen is the LBD of skincare. And of course, in typical teenage fashion, I didn't listen. So I have my fair share of sun damage and wrinkles. But that doesn't stop me from protecting what I have. Except for only a few days, I wear an SPF on my face every day. When sticking with SPF aim for 30 or higher, anything else is not going to cut it. My favorite lately has been Supergoop's. I love the natural ingredients and the fact that it protects against BOTH UVA and UVB rays ( you need that!). I use this one for the bonus of Vitamin C, which helps fight free radicals and reduced the sun damage I already have. Other sunscreens that I have heard great reviews on are: Paula's Choice Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30, Paula's Choice Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30, Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40, and Colleen Rothschild Triple Defense Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 40

  2. Concealer: That bronzy glow is something I look forward to every year, but even with the sun-kissed glow comes a few areas I need to highlight or cover-up. The Ilia True Skin Serum Concealer is a dream! I love the shade range and it's a really light and natural finish for the summertime. I wear the shade Yucca SC2.

  3. Bronzer/Multi Stick: For me, the summer means sunkissed skin that requires minimal effort and a simple effortless look. That is why I love both the Ilia Multi Stick and River Organics Blush Stick, which I purchase from the KindHumans site. These are super user-friendly and I find add just enough to transform my look if I wanted to add a little color to my face. I love that they are in stick form so it can travel easily wherever I go. Kindhumans also features another makeup brand called Ere Perez that I am going to give a try this summer as well.

  4. Mascara: This is not something I wear every day, but when I want to make myself feel a little more awake or head out for date night, I love these easy-to-use mascaras that are stay proof without being waterproof. I have very oily lids and most mascaras transfer onto my lids within hours of application. I have been using the Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara and it's amazing! It stays put most of the day and is so easy to take off at night without tugging on your gentle eye area. I got mine in my FabFitFun Spring Box, but you can check it out here if you are interested.
